On the afternoon of April 24, 1964, a police officer named Lonnie Zamora was chasing a speeding car through the desert outside Socorro, New Mexico, when he heard a roar and saw a flame drop from the sky. Thinking a dynamite shack had blown up, he broke off the chase and drove toward it.
What he found instead became one of the most respected UFO cases on record. About a hundred and fifty yards off, resting on the ground, sat a shiny egg shaped craft standing on four legs. Beside it stood two small figures in what looked like white coveralls. As Zamora got closer, the figures vanished, the roar returned, and the object lifted off and shot away over the hills. Where it had rested, investigators found scorched brush and fresh, still smoking impressions pressed into the ground.
Zamora had a reputation as a level headed, honest officer with no interest in fame. The United States Air Force, through Project Blue Book, investigated thoroughly and, in the end, listed the case as unknown. The man who led the project’s scientific review called it the most puzzling case he ever handled.
