Over roughly twenty five hours in April 1977, in the quiet town of Dover, Massachusetts, three teenagers on separate occasions reported seeing the same impossible creature. It began on the night of April 21, when seventeen year old Bill Bartlett, driving with friends, saw something on a low stone wall on Farm Street. It was small, maybe four feet tall, with thin gangly limbs, hairless skin, and a large watermelon shaped head. Worst of all, he said, were the eyes, two big round orbs glowing orange in his headlights. It had no nose and no mouth.
Later that same night, fifteen year old John Baxter saw a similar figure on another road, and the next night a third teenager, Abby Brabham, described the same thing yet again. None of them knew what the others had reported. Each drew a sketch, and the sketches matched.
A cryptozoologist named Loren Coleman investigated, interviewed the witnesses, and gave the creature the name that stuck, the Dover Demon. Police were less impressed, suggesting it was nothing more than a school vacation hoax.
The truth may be far stranger than we have been told, not because a monster stalked Dover, but because three teenagers who never compared notes drew the same strange face.
