Socrates

Socrates walked the streets of Athens in the fifth century before Christ, a stonemason with bare feet and endless questions. He wrote nothing down. He simply asked people what they truly knew, and showed them how little anyone knows.

Athens sentenced him to death for corrupting the youth and questioning the gods. He drank the hemlock calmly, teaching his friends about the immortal soul to the very end.

In Their Words

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”

Plato, Apology 38a (translation by Dan Dillman)

“Wonder is the feeling of the lover of wisdom, and philosophy begins in wonder.”

Plato, Theaetetus 155d (translation by Dan Dillman)

What This Sage Teaches Us

Socrates taught that wisdom begins with admitting what we do not know. He spoke of an inner voice, a guiding spirit that warned him when he was about to go wrong. Question everything, listen within, and never stop seeking.

Reflect: What belief have you never questioned?
