Plato was the student of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle. In Athens he founded the Academy, which lasted for nearly nine hundred years. His dialogues carried the teachings of his master to the whole world.
His most famous teaching is the allegory of the cave: prisoners chained in the dark mistake shadows on the wall for reality, until one breaks free and climbs into the sunlight.
In Their Words
“The power to learn is already present in every soul. Education is the art of turning the eye of the soul away from the shadows and toward the light.”
Republic 518c (translation by Dan Dillman)
What This Sage Teaches Us
Plato taught that this world of change is a shadow of a higher world of perfect ideas, and that the soul remembers that world. True learning is remembering. We do not need to be filled with wisdom from outside. We need to turn around and face the light.
Reflect: What shadows have you mistaken for the real thing?
