Patanjali was the sage of ancient India who gathered the science of yoga into 196 short threads, the Yoga Sutras. Little is known of his life, but his small book became the foundation of yoga as a spiritual path.
To Patanjali, yoga was never about stretching. It was the science of uniting the soul with the Divine through mastery of the mind.
In Their Words
“Yoga is the stilling of the movements of the mind. Then the seer rests in its own true nature.”
Yoga Sutras 1.2-1.3 (translation by Dan Dillman)
What This Sage Teaches Us
Patanjali taught the eight limbs of yoga: right conduct, self-discipline, posture, breath, turning the senses within, concentration, meditation, and finally union. When the waves of thought grow still, the lake of the mind reflects the light of the true Self.
Reflect: For five minutes today, sit still and simply watch your thoughts. Who is watching?
