Westall 1966

What do you think about this?

On the morning of April 6, 1966, in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton South, hundreds of schoolchildren watched something they would argue about for the rest of their lives. Students and teachers at Westall High School, out on the grounds, looked up to see a silver grey object, round with a domed top, moving across the sky in broad daylight.

By many accounts it descended behind a stand of pine trees near an open field known as the Grange, sat for a time, then rose and shot away at high speed. Some witnesses said several small aircraft appeared and seemed to circle it before it left. More than two hundred people are said to have seen it. Children ran toward the field, teachers tried to hold them back, and by afternoon adults in suits were reportedly walking the grounds telling everyone to say nothing.

No official explanation ever satisfied the witnesses. Weather balloon, they were told. A training exercise. Yet the people who were there, now grown old, still describe the same craft, the same silence afterward, the same feeling of being told to forget.

Could it be that two hundred ordinary schoolchildren, watching the same thing in daylight, saw exactly what they said they saw?

A stray balloon and a convenient cover story, or something that truly came down in that paddock? What do you think landed at Westall?
