In the summer of 1988, in the flat farm country around Bishopville, South Carolina, a seventeen year old named Christopher Davis pulled over near Scape Ore Swamp to change a flat tire late at night. As he finished, he said, something came at him out of the dark. He described it as around seven feet tall, green and scaly, with glowing red eyes and three fingers on each hand. He scrambled into his car, and as he sped off, he claimed the thing leapt onto the roof and clung there before he shook it loose.
It sounds like a tall tale, except for what turned up afterward. Davis passed a polygraph. And over the following weeks, other residents reported damage to their vehicles, deep scratches and bite like dents in the metal, along the roads near that swamp. The story spread so far that the county saw a rush of curious visitors, and the Lizard Man became local legend.
Skeptics have their answers. A frightened teenager, a bear standing on its hind legs, a wave of copycat pranks feeding a story that had already caught fire.
