The thylacine, the Tasmanian tiger, was a striped, dog sized marsupial predator that once ranged across Australia and New Guinea and, by the time Europeans arrived, was holding on only in Tasmania. The last one anyone can prove existed died in a Hobart zoo in September 1936. The story goes it was locked out of its shelter on a cold night, though researchers now lean toward old age. Officially, that was the end of the species.
Except the sightings never stopped. For nearly ninety years, farmers, park rangers, and travelers have reported the same thing, a stiff tailed animal with dark stripes crossing a road at dusk and slipping into the bush. Some reports come from level headed people with nothing to gain. Blurry photos and casts of odd tracks surface every few years. Wildlife authorities have quietly logged hundreds of these accounts.
The truth may be far stranger than we have been told.
