On November 17, 1986, a Japan Airlines cargo 747 was flying over Alaska at night when the crew noticed lights pacing them. The captain, a veteran with thousands of hours in the air, described two smaller craft that darted around his jumbo jet, and then something enormous behind them, a dark shape he said was larger than an aircraft carrier, blotting out the stars. It stayed with them for the better part of an hour across hundreds of miles of Alaskan sky.
Here is what makes this one hard to wave away. Air traffic control in Anchorage, and by some accounts military radar, picked up a return near the plane. The FAA opened a formal investigation. The captain never backed down from his account, and it effectively ended his flying career.
The truth may be far stranger than we have been told.
