On the night of September 12, 1952, in the hills of Braxton County, West Virginia, a group of boys saw a bright object streak down and seem to land on a nearby farm. They ran to get a local woman named Kathleen May, gathered a few more kids and a young National Guardsman named Eugene Lemon, and climbed the hill in the dark to see what had fallen.
What they described next has haunted the town ever since. In the beam of a flashlight, they said, stood a creature ten feet tall, with a round red face that glowed, a head shaped like a pointed hood, and a body that looked like dark pleated metal. A choking mist hung in the air. Several of them fell sick that night, with burning eyes and nausea that lingered for days.
They fled down the hill in terror. By the next day the story was everywhere, and the thing had a name, the Flatwoods Monster.
Skeptics have a tidy answer. The light was a meteor, they say, and the monster was a barn owl perched in a tree, its shape and shine distorted by fear and shadow and a single shaking flashlight.
Could it be that a group of level headed locals, several of them grown adults, mistook a frightened barn owl for a towering metal figure that left them physically ill?
