Dionysius the Areopagite

Dionysius the Areopagite is the name carried by a mysterious Christian mystic of around the year 500, writing in the name of the Athenian whom Paul converted on the Hill of Mars. His short writings shaped Christian mysticism for a thousand years.

His Mystical Theology teaches the way of unknowing: we come closest to the Divine when we let go of every image and idea of it.

In Their Words

“Free from all knowing, one is joined in the highest part of oneself to the One who is beyond all knowing, and by knowing nothing, one knows beyond the mind.”

Mystical Theology 1.3 (translation by Dan Dillman)

What This Sage Teaches Us

Dionysius teaches that the Great Spirit is greater than any name, word or picture we can give. Prayer at its highest is silence. When we empty ourselves of what we think we know, we make room for the Light that cannot be described.

Reflect: What idea of the Divine are you ready to let go of, to make room for more?
