For about five months, beginning in late November of 1989, the skies over Belgium filled with reports of something impossible. Thousands of people, from ordinary drivers to police officers, described the same thing. A huge, silent, triangular craft, flat and dark, with a bright light glowing at each of its three corners and a red light pulsing in the center. It moved slowly, sometimes hovering, then accelerating away far faster than any known aircraft. In all, more than thirteen thousand people would report seeing it.
Then came the night that made the case famous. On the thirtieth of March in 1990, Belgian radar operators tracked an unknown object in the sky, and the air force scrambled two F sixteen fighter jets to investigate. Over the next hour, the pilots managed to lock their radar onto a target several times, but each time it made changes in speed and altitude so extreme that no human pilot could have survived them, and it slipped away. The pilots never saw it with their own eyes.
To this day the Belgian wave stands out because so many of the witnesses were trained observers, and because the military itself took it seriously and released its findings to the public.
Is it possible that for one winter, something flew over a modern European country in full view of its air force, and simply could not be caught or explained?
