Stretching for more than a hundred miles between New York, Vermont, and up into Canada lies Lake Champlain, a deep, cold, ancient body of water. And for as long as people have lived along its shores, they have told of something living in it. The Abenaki people spoke of a creature in the lake long before Europeans arrived. Local legend named it Champ, and to this day the town of Port Henry keeps a sign tallying the sightings.
The most famous piece of evidence came in 1977, when a woman named Sandra Mansi took a color photograph of what appears to be a long neck and a dark hump rising out of the water. It remains one of the most debated cryptid photos ever taken, because no clear sign of a hoax has ever been found in it, and the shape simply does not match any obvious animal in the frame.
Skeptics have reasonable answers. A floating log, a large sturgeon, a trick of waves and light on a vast lake where the eye is easily fooled. Lake Champlain has no known animal that fits the descriptions, and no body, bone, or clear film has ever settled it.
What if the lake really is deep and old enough to hide something large that has simply learned to stay unseen, surfacing just often enough to keep the legend alive?
