In January 1934, the Los Angeles Times ran a straight faced front page story. A mining engineer named G. Warren Shufelt claimed that deep beneath downtown Los Angeles lay a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers built by an ancient race he called the Lizard People, who had dug underground to survive a catastrophe thousands of years ago. He said the story came from a Hopi chief. He said the maze was laid out in the shape of a lizard and stocked with gold tablets recording their history.
City officials actually gave him permission to dig. He sank a shaft two hundred and fifty feet down on Fort Moore Hill above the Civic Center, chasing readings from a device he trusted completely. The tail of the lizard, he said, ran on toward the Central Library. Then the money ran out, the shaft was filled, and the whole thing was quietly forgotten.
