In a quiet valley in central Norway called Hessdalen, the sky does something that scientists still cannot fully explain. Beginning around 1981, residents started reporting strange lights, sometimes several times a week. Glowing orbs, white, yellow, and red, would appear low over the valley, hover in silence, drift slowly along the ground, and sometimes shoot away at tremendous speed. At the peak, people were seeing them dozens of times a week.
What makes Hessdalen different from almost every other lights in the sky story is what happened next. In 1983, researchers set up a formal scientific effort called Project Hessdalen, hauling cameras, radar, and spectrum analyzers into the cold valley to catch the phenomenon on instruments. And they did. Over the years they have recorded the lights on film and on radar, measured their spectra, and confirmed that something real is happening in that air, not just in people’s eyes.
The explanations offered are as strange as the lights. Some scientists suspect an unusual plasma, perhaps dust from the valley’s mineral rich rock reacting in the atmosphere. Others have proposed tiny natural batteries formed by metals in the ground. None of it is settled, and the lights still come.
Is it possible that a remote Norwegian valley is quietly producing a brand new kind of natural phenomenon, one that physics has not yet named?
