A Wisconsin newspaper reporter named Linda Godfrey took an assignment in 1991 that she expected to be a quick, silly filler piece, a farmer near Elkhorn claiming he had seen something upright and furred crossing Bray Road at night. Then more calls came in. Then more after that.
What the callers described was consistent, an animal that moved on two legs like a person but was covered in fur and had the pointed muzzle of a wolf, standing well over six feet. Godfrey found out later that a very similar creature had allegedly been seen in the same area decades earlier, in 1936, near a school called St. Coletta, long before her own reporting started. She kept collecting accounts through the 1990s until she had enough for a book, published in 2003, that turned a local rumor into a case study wildlife investigators still reference.
No photograph exists. No physical evidence has ever been recovered, no track cast that biologists agree could not have come from a known animal. What exists is decades of consistent testimony from people who describe the same silhouette, on the same rural road, separated by more than fifty years.
Makes you wonder how a story that started with one farmer in 1936 kept finding new witnesses who had never heard the original account.
