The Hopi have lived on the high mesas of northern Arizona for more than a thousand years. Old Oraibi, one of their villages, is among the oldest continuously lived-in towns in North America. Their name is often said to mean the peaceful ones.
Their teachings tell of a journey through several worlds. Each time the people forgot the Creator and fell out of balance, that world ended, and the faithful climbed up into the next through an opening called the sipapu. We now live in the Fourth World.
What This Teaching Shows Us
The Hopi teach that we are caretakers of the earth, entrusted by the Creator to live simply, humbly and in balance. When people grow proud and greedy, life becomes koyaanisqatsi, life out of balance, and the world cries out. Prayer, ceremony and right living keep the world turning in harmony.
Spider Grandmother, who helped bring the people into this world, reminds us that everything is woven together. Pull one thread and the whole web moves.
Reflect: What simple act today can help bring your world back into balance?
