Siddhartha Gautama was born a prince in the foothills of the Himalayas around 2,500 years ago. He left his palace to discover why there is suffering, and after years of searching he sat beneath the Bodhi tree and vowed not to rise until he understood.
He rose awakened. For the next forty-five years, the Buddha, the Awakened One, walked India teaching the path out of suffering.
In Their Words
“Mind is the forerunner of all things. Mind is their master; by mind they are made. Speak or act with a pure mind, and happiness follows you like a shadow that never leaves.”
Dhammapada 1-2 (translation by Dan Dillman)
What This Sage Teaches Us
The Buddha taught that our world is shaped by the thoughts we hold. Suffering comes from grasping and fear. Peace comes from seeing clearly, from the middle way between extremes, and from compassion for every living being.
Change the mind, and the life follows like a shadow.
Reflect: What thought have you been carrying that you are ready to set down?
