Chilam Balam means the Jaguar Priest, the prophet. He was a Maya seer of the Yucatán who, the books say, foretold the coming of strangers from the east before the Spanish arrived.
After the conquest, Maya scribes secretly wrote their ancient knowledge in their own language using the Spanish alphabet. These Books of Chilam Balam, named after the towns that kept them, such as Chumayel, Tizimin and Mani, hold Maya history, medicine, astronomy, riddles and prophecy.
What This Teaching Shows Us
The Maya taught that time is a living, sacred wheel. Each katun, a cycle of about twenty years, carries its own spirit, its own lords and its own prophecy, and the great cycles return again and again. What happened before will come again in a new form. Those who know the count of days can read the face of the times.
The Jaguar Priest teaches us to watch the signs, honor the cycles, and remember that every age, even a dark one, turns toward a new dawn.
Reflect: What cycle in your life is coming around again, and what has it come to teach you?
