In March 1974, a farmer plowing a field on the island of Sardinia struck stone. What they had hit turned out to be a buried army of giants. Over the years that followed, archaeologists pulled more than ten thousand fragments from that ground and pieced together dozens of towering statues, warriors, archers, and boxers, some standing well over seven feet tall, with strange round eyes carved as double circles.
They are around three thousand years old, among the oldest large stone statues in the western Mediterranean, made by the mysterious Nuragic people who left no written language behind. And here is the part that nags at me. Someone, long ago, deliberately smashed these giants to pieces and buried them.
Could it be that a forgotten civilization carved a race of stone giants to guard their dead, and then a later hand tried to erase them?
