The Carnac Stones

What do you think about this?

On the coast of Brittany in France stand more than three thousand stones, set upright by human hands and arranged in long straight rows that run for miles across the countryside. They are called the Carnac stones, and they were raised somewhere around six to seven thousand years ago, which makes them older than Stonehenge and older than the pyramids.

Think about that. Before writing, before the wheel reached Brittany, someone quarried, moved, and stood thousands of massive stones in careful parallel lines, and then left no explanation at all. Were they a giant calendar, a map of the stars, a landscape of the dead, a path for a ritual we cannot picture? Every theory has holes. Local legend even says they are a Roman legion frozen into stone by Saint Cornely.

Makes you wonder what would drive a people to spend generations lining up thousands of rocks with that kind of care.

A lost astronomy, a forgotten faith, or something we have no word for? What do you think the Carnac stones were for?
