The Amber Room

What do you think about this?

It was once called the eighth wonder of the world. The Amber Room was a whole chamber, its walls covered floor to ceiling in panels of carved amber, backed with gold leaf and mirrors, glowing like frozen honey when the candles were lit. Given to Peter the Great and later installed in the Catherine Palace outside Saint Petersburg, it was worth a fortune almost beyond counting.

When Nazi forces swept into the Soviet Union in 1941, they stripped the room in just thirty six hours, packed it into twenty seven crates, and shipped it west to the city of Königsberg, where it was put back on display in the castle. And then, as the war collapsed around Germany, it vanished. The last confirmed sighting was in January 1945. After that, nothing.

Most historians now believe the amber burned when Königsberg Castle was destroyed in the fighting that spring. But not everyone accepts that. For eighty years, treasure hunters have chased rumors of crates hidden in mine shafts, sunk in lagoons, sealed in bunkers, whispers that the Amber Room was spirited away before the fire and is waiting still.

Is it possible that the greatest treasure looted in the entire war did not burn at all, but sits intact in some forgotten vault, exactly where desperate men left it?

Ashes under a ruined castle, or a fortune in amber still hidden underground? What do you think became of the Amber Room?
